River City Trouble
1/20/2026

Never been to River City. There's always a first time for everything, except for trouble; it hangs on me like a cheap suit. I asked the cab driver where the river was. I could see his eyes dart up to the rear-view mirror and back down again.
'It's got no river."
"Figures I'd be in a small town with no river and no city."
"Where do you want to be dropped off, buddy?"
"You know where the Polish Prince Bar and Grill is?"
"I should know it's only one of two bars in the city."
"You mean town, don't you."
Mac hoped Wojo was waiting for him and had the informant under wraps. He had smiled when he heard of the Polish Prince Bar and Grill. "My type of place."
The cab driver interrupted his thoughts. "See those bright neon signs on the right. That is the bar. Just to give you advice wise guy...I'd mind my Ps and Qs in there."
Mac handed him a fiveer. Keep the change for the advice."
Mac peeked into the bar window. It was packed. He looked around the deserted streets. Seemed everyone in town was in the bar. The door opened, and a man was thrown out into the street, his hat following him. Mac helped him up.
"Leave him alone, Mr. He can crawl out of here by himself."
Mac put the hat on the drunk and nodded to him.
Mac moved to enter the bar. The man blocked him. Mac saw the sap in his right hand. "What did I tell you?" He saw his arm start to move, Mac punched him through the door into the bar. He stepped over the unconscious man and looked for Wojo. He saw him waving to him from the corner.
"Quite the entrance, Mac. Your double is on the table."
Mac wasn't listening. His eyes were too busy looking at the woman seated at the table. Her dress looked as if it had been painted on her, showcasing every available curve and attribute that made a woman a woman.
Still staring at the woman, he asked Wojo to fill him in on the details.
"Her name is Josephine Marie Rose. Hotter than a two-dollar bill."
"Where is she from?"
"The same area as Kathleen."
Mac's eyes fell to the table at his bourbon, and he downed half of it.
"Ask her why a woman like her would know a woman like Kathleen?"
