Featured Interview With Author Steven G. Walker

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Raised in Cleveland, Ohio in a Slovenian and Italian neighborhood. Until I published my second novel…Gunny Mac Private Detective Trouble in Cleveland did I realize what an impact Cleveland made on me.

I served during two decades as an Infantry officer and I now live in central Ohio on a small farm with my wife and two border collies. Molly the border collie and Beauregard Pierre Townsend Walker a tricolor 75 pound border collie I call the big lug. He is a GBC…a giant border collie the size of a large lab.

We have a large garden and I mow many acres which tends to mellow me out.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was in the 6th grade…I read forty books that year, had the highest academic average and was the number one citizen in the school. I started reading in the 2nd grade and never stopped.

I started writing as a young U.S.Marine, writing articles for Leatherneck magazine for $5.00 an article. I wrote every day in a note book about my experiences as a Marine

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Some of my favorite authors: William Eckert, David McCullough, Dean Koontz, Preston and Child, Stephen Hunter, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler.

My favorite genre…the noir hard boiled private eye who will drink, and fight but never give up his honor for money or for a person.

Many people ask me what it felt like to write a book. I don't know what to say except there are millions of books and millions of authors…no big deal.

The they ask me how I felt after finishing my novel…just a sense of relief that I didn't quit.

My dad inspired me to write…he said, "Son write what you know about and make up the rest!" He introduced me to the black and white movies of the 1940s and 1950s with Bogart, Broderick Crawford, Alan Ladd and famous private eyes like Sam Spade, Mickey Spillane, Micheal Shayne, and Charlie Chan. I love them.

I write like Raymond Chandler because no one writes like this any more and I miss new stories of private eyes like Sam Spade…so I decided to write some. I reread my books which are in EBOOK, paper back and audio book format.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest is Gunny Mac Private Detective Trouble in Cleveland.

Someone killed Father John in the confessional at St. Stanislaus church in Cleveland, Ohio and a factory is blown up on the Cuyahoga River.

Mac returns to the city that he loves to find nothing but trouble.

It is 1943 and Cleveland is the crown jewel East of the Mississippi River where gangsters and the Hollywood elite hang out and the city elite welcomes them with open arms thanks to the millions of dollars spent by Andrew Carnegie and Rockefeller.

Mac and his detectives battle the Nazis, the Black Hand Movement, with the help of the Polish, Slovenian, and Italian mafias in ethnic Cleveland.

Mac brings his detectives, Burke, Wojohowitz and the lovable Padre McCaffery with him to solve these crimes with hilarious results.
