Step 1.   Concept and Premise

We will start with small steps…building the foundation first. No rhetoric ( the study of writing or speaking as a means of communication or persuasion). Just simple writing steps we all can understand.

Step 1. You must understand what the concept of your book is…

Just a simple idea that you can build a story around…doesn’t have to be much…just a sentence, an idea you can run with.

Step 2. You must understand what the premise of your book is…

An assertion or proposition which forms the basis for a work or theory.
Not knowing about or understanding the importance of these two building blocks, concept, and premise cost me two years of writing… not knowing where my story was going.
Example of Concept: What if a man with supernatural powers came to earth?
Just a simple idea that you can build a story around…doesn’t have to be much…just a sentence, an idea you can run with.
Example of Premise: What if this supernatural man walked among us without us knowing and served mankind?
Example of Concept: What if a son found out his father robbing a bank in his youth?
Example of Premise: What if the boy found out about his dead father robbing a bank in his youth and now men were out to kill him unless he found the money?
Example of Concept: What if a man found out his wife was cheating on him?
Example of Premise: What if the man left his wife in poverty and years later found out she had an affair with a man whom she hated to save her husband’s life.
Example of Concept: What if a man had only one month to live?
Example of Premise:  What if that dying man’s goal was to help all the people he screwed over in his life?
It is better if you start with a “what if. ” Because a question begs to be answered.
The concept and premise of my novel, Gunny Mac Private Detective Trouble in Chinatown is….
Concept: What if  President Roosevelt decided to burn all the money in Hawaii and replace it with funny money because the Jap’s were going to invade Hawaii and he didn’t want to have the money used against the U.S.?
Premise: What if the man responsible to burn the money was going to steal the money and the only one standing in his way was a shot-up Navy Cross winner,  Gunny Mac hero of Bloody Ridge.
